From Riobamba we take a bus to Palitawacha a ghost town on the edge of the volcano where half the buildings were either destroyed or abandoned when Tungurahua last erupted. The only people still remaining in the town are farmers whose connection to the land is too deep to leave.
From Palitawacha we follow a clean river stream where locals can be seen fishing for trout until we reach another abandoned building that was once a big Health Spa Complex built over thermal springs but evacuated during the last eruption.
From there we take a trail that clings to the side of Tungaragua where we will see 7 different waterfalls that adorn the sides of the mountain until we reach a system of caves that let you see inside the mountains heart.
